Going into the new year, you have hopes, goals, and dreams for yourself. Keeping those goals at the forefront of you mind is important so that you continue to take action towards what you want to make happen in the new year. One way to keep your goals on your mind is to have a daily reminder. Many choose a word of the year as guidance towards what you want to achieve. This year, I’m going to encourage you to dig a bit deeper and come up with a guiding question.
A guiding question is meant to make you pause and think. It helps you become present to the current moment so that you think things through before acting. It’s meant to help guide you in the right direction instead of going down the wrong path. Choosing a guiding question will keep your attention on what you want to create and make happen in the new year.
Start by assessing where you currently are. Complete an inventory of how you feel mentally, physically, and emotionally. Then, decide what you want to work on in the new year. Set a goal for yourself. Next, figure out what you need in order to help you achieve this goal. This could be confidence, commitment, perseverance, dedication, etc. Again, this goes back to the theme of choosing a word of the year that gives you the strength, power, and initiative to take action towards your goal. But, this time you’re going take it a step further. You’re going to choose a guiding question to help you get to where you want to be in the new year.
Maybe you need something that will keep you grounded, humble, and in the light. Such as, where do I see the positive here? Opting to look for the good in a situation rather than focusing on the bad will help keep you in the right mindset. You’ll be able to stay focused on you and what you’re working to make happen. You don’t have to get swept up in the negativity, agendas, and backlash from other people. Focus on the positive and what you want to achieve regardless of what anyone else is doing or thinking.
It could be that you’ve been floating aimlessly through life and you’re not quite sure where you’re headed. You’re in search of direction. You need to tune into your gut and trust your instincts for guidance. A question to ask yourself is, am I listening to my intuition? Whenever you need answers, be still and listen for your intuition. As you work on this, you’ll hear that little voice become louder and louder to guide you in the right direction. This will help you make better decisions. Soon you’ll begin recognizing your intuitive thoughts and asking yourself was that your intuition talking?
You may be struggling with taking action towards your goals. You’re easily distracted, procrastinating, and you’re not making much progress at all. Ask yourself, does this action support the life I’m trying to create? If not, choose to take better actions. Get off the couch, stop scrolling, avoid pressing the snooze button, etc. Instead, choose actions that will help you to achieve your goals and live the life you want. Choose to wake up earlier, get that workout in, meal plan, use your planner, etc. Do the things that will help you stay on track and make progress towards your goals.
When it comes to achieving your goals, take yourself into the future when it’s already happened. Think about what you would do today if you had already achieved that level of success. Here is a question to act from that place as if you’ve already achieved your goals, if I were her now, what would she do? When you act from your future self, you can take action with more confidence because you don’t have the fear, worry, and doubt plaguing you about if you will achieve your goal. Rather, you act from a place of knowing that it’s already happened. Your goal achievement is a done deal!
Now, it’s your turn. Come up with your own guiding question for what you need in the new year. This will help steer the course of your future so choose wisely. Determine what you need most right now to help you achieve success in the new year. Choose a question that will remind you of that. Take time to journal a few of your own guiding questions. Brainstorm some ideas and try on a question or two for a couple of days before deciding. Go with your gut and what feels good to you.
Your guiding question will help you be present and focused on what matters most. Put your guiding question on your phone’s wallpaper. Write it on a sticky note on your bathroom mirror. Place it somewhere you’ll see it and be reminded daily. Constantly ask yourself your guiding question. Watch as you make more progress towards your goals and life of your dreams than ever before.
