There are three archetypes that are holding you back from achieving your goal. See if you recognize yourself in any of the following three archetypes. Once you identify one or all that are culprits for you, your newfound awareness will help you remedy these self-sabotaging archetypes so that you can take action and achieve your goal.
The first archetype is procrastination. Underneath procrastination is this belief that you can’t actually achieve what you truly want. Therefore, you procrastinate. You put off working on existing action items that you know you should be completing. You leave unfinished tasks on your to do list until another day when you might feel like it. Although, you never feel like completing it. You’re self-sabotaging by procrastinating. This only creates more stress, worry, and sadness within you as your goal remains unachieved. Take notice of when you’re procrastinating and ask yourself what can you do right now that is a step towards achieving your goal. Then, take that action and do not procrastinate any longer. Getting into action proves that you can achieve your goal because you’ll slowly begin to see progress.
The next archetype is the overthinker. You are an overthinker when you constantly delay making a decision. If you find yourself running through each and every single scenario that could or might happen, then you’re overthinking things. Your brain often goes to the worst case scenario that rarely happens. Overthinking slows you down. You’re not confident in your own decisions. You’re always ruminating on all the possible different outcomes because you don’t yet trust yourself to make the “right” decision. Realize that there is no “right” decision. You can only make the best decision with the information you currently have. Instead of self-sabotaging by overthinking, set a deadline for you to make a decision. Stop spinning your wheels on all the different ways to go and just choose one to run with. You can always adjust, improve, and make changes as go. Avoid overthinking and trust that you have everything you need within you to figure things out as you go.
Lastly, the self-critic archetype is the one where you repeatedly beat yourself up. You’re very critical of yourself. You put yourself down for the littlest of mistakes. However, no one perfect. Instead, focus on your strengths of what you do well and the accomplishments you already have. Ignoring the positive aspects of yourself and obsessing over your flaws will not boost your confidence. That only blocks your creativity, energy, and being able to get into a state of flow. Rather than self-sabotaging with the self-critic, start believing in yourself. Believe that you are enough and worthy of achieving your goal. The truth is, the only thing standing in your way of achieving your goal is you. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Remind yourself of your past successes and use this as proof that you can achieve your goal.
Pay attention to when you get stuck in one of these self-sabotaging archetypes. When you do, celebrate the little successes you have each day. Be proud of the action steps you took and the tasks you’ve completed instead of procrastinating or overthinking. If you do encounter a misstep or even what you may consider a failure, trust that you’ll figure it and bounce back. It’s all a part of the process to achieving your goal. Do not let that make you procrastinate, overthink, or be critical of yourself. Instead, notice your successes more than your failures and you’ll be on your way to achieving your goal.
