Five Steps For Successful Goal Setting

May 21, 2020

Setting goals gives your life direction and purpose.  Goals challenge you and provide you with an opportunity to grow.  But, goal setting is more than just saying you want to accomplish something and leaving it at that.  There’s a few more steps required to see your goal come to fruition.  Here are five steps to successful goal setting.

1. Set A Realistic Goal

Setting a realistic goal does not mean that you make your goals easy to attain.  Rather, you pick one quality goal that will require dedication and some hard work.  A realistic goal keeps you motivated because you can easily track your progress and see yourself achieving your goal in the foreseeable future.  It’s important to avoid setting multiple impractical or impossible goals that only be a distraction and leave you feeling exhausted.  You will see so much more progress when you put all your effort and attention into achieving one realistic goal.

2. Pick A Deadline

You need to establish a clear deadline of when you want to achieve your goal.  Otherwise, you’ll procrastinate and keep putting off what you need to do, which causes you to never reach your goal.  Picking a deadline creates a level of accountability for you.  It puts the pressure on that you need to be taking daily action in order to move yourself closer to achieving your goal within your specified time frame.  Pick a deadline that isn’t in the distant future but instead, closer in the near future.  You may feel a bit short on time, but you’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish when you pick a firm deadline.

3. Create A System

You need a system in order to track the progress you’re making on your goals.  Invest in a planner or calendar to keep you organized.  Each day, have an action plan of what tasks you need to be completing.  Block out certain times for tasks solely related to achieving your goal.  Create a system to keep track of the daily activities you’re taking.  This will allow you to see the progress you’re making and will keep you motivated to continue taking action when you feel like giving up.

4. Review Your Goal

Make sure you’re writing your goal down.  Keep your goal somewhere where you can review it daily.  This will ensure that your goal remain at the forefront of your mind.  You could design a simple wallpaper on your phone as your daily reminder.  Keep your goal with you at all times so you know what you’re working towards.  Review your goal daily to make sure you’re doing something every day to move you closer to achieving your goal.

5. Have Unwavering Belief

It’s important to have the right mindset when it comes to achieving your goal.  If you don’t believe in yourself or your goal then it will be extremely difficult to achieve your goal.  Remain positive and optimistic.  Believe in yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to.  Have unwavering belief that you will achieve your goal.  Watch as any fears you may have had disappear.  See what brave, bold actions you take when you believe without a doubt that you will achieve your goal.  Nothing will stand in your way of achieving your goal when you have unwavering belief.
