How To Get Over Your Fear Of Making Mistakes

Jan 10, 2019

It’s okay to make mistakes. Yet, growing up we are taught not to make mistakes.  There is so much pressure to get all the correct answers in order to get the perfect grade.  Mistakes mean you did a poor job and the assignment you just completed comes back marked up with giant red strike throughs.  Mistakes make you feel like you messed up.

Think of everything you could create if your goal was to do it messy and make mistakes.

The truth is, mistakes are lessons you need to learn.  Mistakes allow you to take note of what didn’t work and improve for next time.

Let go of making everything perfect.  Perfection only holds you back from sharing your creativity with the world.

The first step in getting over your fear of making mistakes is to know that it is going to be imperfect. Something will go wrong.  In that moment when a mistake happens, you will have tons learn and it will make you a better person in the process.

The second step is to be prepared for a mistake.  Think about what you will do when a mistake happens.  When imperfect happens, you might shake it off.  You brush it off like it’s no big deal.  You may need to dance it out to let go of the frustration. Perhaps you need to laugh about it to find some sort of joy in the moment.  Whatever it is, choose what you’re going to do to release the negative energy out of your body.

The third step is when a mistake happens, you say, “I was waiting for you.”  Confidently say you knew it bound to happen.  You feel so much more prepared now because you know how you’re going to react.  You’ve already determined, when a mistake happens then this is how you will respond. Do your dance, laugh, or move on.

Once you’ve released that negative energy then it’s time to jump into action.  Put on your master troubleshooter hat and find a solution. You may already have a backup plan for when something goes wrong.  Maybe you have backup technology on standby just in case something happens.  Or maybe your solution is to just to be okay with having to wing it when things don’t go as planned.  Remember, it’s imperfect.  Things don’t always go exactly as planned.  The key is, you don’t let a mishap keep you stuck, you keep going!

Lastly, ask for help. You may be struggling with some technology and need an IT person.  Maybe it’s simply asking a friend or family member just to be there in case you need them. Moral support always boosts your confidence.  Do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

It’s important you realize that you are not alone.  You may not always see it, but everyone makes mistakes.  No one is perfect.

Embrace the mistakes.  Make it messy!  Keep taking action and do not let mistakes keep you paralyzed.  Shift your mindset to realize that mistakes are okay.  Use them as lessons learned.  There is so much you can accomplish if you let go of the fear of making mistakes.
