You’re either still making progress towards your goals and going full steam ahead or you’ve already fallen off track. There are many reasons why you give up on your goals. But, you might be self sabotaging your success and you don’t even know it. Self sabotage happens when you’re unclear of your goal, you’re not taking action, you’re comparing yourself to others, or you’re easily distracted by new shiny objects. None of these things will help you get to where you want to go. Let’s take a look at how you are self sabotaging your success.
The first thing you need to do is to make sure you are completely clear on your vision. Know where you’re headed and what you’re working to achieve. Get really specific about the goal you want to achieve. If you don’t know where you’re going then it’s going to be difficult to figure out how to get there.
Once you’re clear on your vision, you must trust and believe that you’re on the right path. You’re not always going to be one hundred percent certain of every step to take. But, trust that you are generally headed in the right direction and that you’ll be able to figure it out as you go. Continue to take action towards your goal even when it doesn’t feel like you’re making progress or moving in the right direction. Sometimes you’re right on the verge of a breakthrough but you simply give up too early. Trust and believe in yourself to take action towards your goal.
Next, don’t compare yourself to someone else. You’re on your own path. It doesn’t matter where someone else is or what they have done. Identify your own path and stick to it. Stay the course and make minor adjustments here and there. Do not judge yourself. You’re bound to make mistakes and encounter failure when you’re working to achieve your goal. Perfection is not realistic. Instead, with each action you take, you’re learning and gathering information which will help you to achieve your goal. You are on your own path and no one else’s.
Lastly, do not get distracted by new shiny objects. Often, when it gets difficult to achieve your goal, you decide to focus on something else. Maybe that’s something easier, like non-goal related tasks. It could be that you decide what you have been doing isn’t working so you just give up all together. Or perhaps you get an idea for a new goal and choose to work on that instead. All of these are distractions that are ultimately destination procrastination. You need to be focusing on what really matters, which are the tasks related to the goal you want to achieve.
What you focus on is what you attract. Get clear on the goal you want to achieve. Trust and believe that you are on the right path. Let go of negative thoughts and comparison. Avoid being distracted by trying to follow all the other footprints that wander in every other possible direction. You don’t need to constantly compare yourself with other people or change your mind every minute based on new information to jump to the next shiny object. Keep your head down and stay on your course. Doing this will help you to stop self sabotaging your success.
