Reasons To Find A Mentor

Feb 28, 2019

A mentor is a leader.  You look up to them for a few reasons.

You look up to someone because they have achieved what you want to do.  This may be something you’ve been struggling to figure out and seeing that someone else has done it, allows you to see that it’s possible.  The best part is, they’ve gone before you. Therefore, they can give you guidance on how they did it so you can get there faster.  Learn from their missteps and implement their advice into your own life.

A mentor is also relatable. They are real people who you look up to and admire.  You have things in common with them.  Whether it’s the music they like, their lifestyle, or similar family dynamics.  Often times you can see yourself in your mentor.

Mentors also inspire you and lift you up.  They give you confidence in yourself that you too can achieve great things.  Their guidance gives you courage to step outside your comfort zone and do things that may be a bit scary at first.  But, with their help, you’re challenged to face your fear, and learn.  Mentors encourage you to be better.

Some of your biggest mentors are people you’ve never met.  They can be authors, corporate executives, podcasters, or video influencers.  Hearing their words in your ear every day builds a strong trust between you two.  You almost feel like best friends because they are constantly in your world.  You’re learning, observing, and taking notes from what they share.

Mentors take a stand for something they believe in.  They know they can’t please everyone but firmly believe in their message.  They put themselves out there in the face of criticism.  This pushes away people who don’t relate and only strengthens the bond with those that do. A following is created and this is what makes a great mentor; not being afraid to put themselves out there.

A mentor rarely shows self doubt publicly.  However, if you get to know them, you’ll see behind the scenes that not everything is perfect.  A true mentor will let you see the good and the bad.  They don’t share the difficult times for attention to feel bad for them as a woe is me.  Instead, they let you know they’re working through it, they will get through it, and they will be okay.  They see the situation through a positive lens, knowing it will make them stronger.

By a mentor sharing their struggles, you now have more confidence in yourself to get through difficult times. Which in turn only builds more trust with you because it makes them that much more relatable.  You don’t have everything figured out and it’s nice to see that even your mentors struggle sometimes.  The relationship only deepens when a mentor lets you in.

Once you’ve built a strong bond with your mentor, whether they know it or not, you’ll soon see how much their advice changes your world.  Your way of thinking can change, behavior, and new habits are created.  What they say resonates with you.  You believe what they are saying is meant to help you live a better life.

The most important key here is to stop trying to learn from everyone.  Focus on few people to be your guide.  Find three mentors that you can look up to.  These mentors have a lifestyle that you want, have achieved a certain level of success you’re interested in reaching, and let you into their life behind the scenes. Learn from these amazing individuals and incorporate some of their advice into your life.  You will grow and become a better person by learning from those that have gone before you.
